Meet Dental Nurse Melissa Boran

My Story – Melissa Boran

My name is Melissa Boran, I am 24 years old and I am currently a dental nurse and an oral health science student from London.

Before I made the choice to enter dentistry I was very uncertain of the path I was on and was unsure of myself. Dentistry changed my life by helping me change the way I see myself and giving me great confidence in my capabilities and in general. While I was doing great in dentistry I felt like something was missing, I wanted to do more and find a purpose for my life. I’ve always wanted to help others but never had the courage to get involved however, with the confidence I gained from dentistry I decided to start volunteering and working with two charities which I still work with today.

One is a dental charity which provides free dental care for the homeless and vulnerable, where I can use my dental qualifications to help those who cannot otherwise access dental care. The other is a local food bank where I help deliver groceries to the vulnerable and elderly who are unable to attend the food bank to  collect their food. Working with these charities made me realise this is what my purpose was and that was to help others. From that moment I decided I have topics that I wanted to raise awareness about and more ways I would like to help and that’s why I decided to do something that I have been wanting to do since I was just a little girl but never had the courage to do growing up and finally enter pageantry. I would like to use my platform to teach the public the importance of oral health, to inspire young women to enter dentistry and educate on the various pathways into dentistry, and also to help as many charities in our country as possible as I’ve observed there are so many people in our country that simply cannot access food and need the help of a kind neighbour.

After qualifying in the Miss England Semi final at Viva Blackpool , Melissa is now a finalist in  the Miss England Grand final at the Grand Station Wolverhampton .
