A woman who was crowned Miss Lincolnshire 45 years ago is hoping to inspire a new generation of young people to enter this year’s Lincolnshire & Yorkshire  Miss and Mr England competitions.

In 1981, Angie Beasley, now Director of Miss England, won the Lincolnshire county title at the Lincolnshire Home & Leisure Show taking home a prize of just £25.

Now, 45 years later, Angie has once again teamed up with Phil Green for the Lincolnshire heat , the man who hosted the very competition she won back in 1981. Having remained friends and in touch since they first met at the competition,  the pair are now co-organising this year’s event together at the Beachcomber Cleethorpes and are calling for contestants from the areas to enter.

The competition has been rebranded as the Yorkshire & Lincolnshire Beauty Awards, which will serve as the official regional qualifier for both the Miss England and Mr England competitions.

For the first time, organisers are inviting applications from both Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, giving young women and men from across the two counties the opportunity to compete for places in the Miss & Mr England National finals.

Regional director Phil Green said “After 45 years, it’s wonderful to be teaming up with Angie Beasley again. I first met Angie as a shy young contestant in Lincolnshire, and since then she has progressed from entering beauty contests to becoming National Director of Miss England on behalf of Miss World. I’m delighted to be presenting the Yorkshire & Lincolnshire regional final in Cleethorpes later this year. Angie’s ultimate ambition is to mentor an English winner to the Miss World crown — perhaps we might discover her here!”

“The competition has changed completely for the better to how it used to be ,” said Angie.

“Back in 1981, contestants simply turned up with a swimsuit and walked across the stage while their measurements were announced. Thankfully, those days are long gone. But the contest gave me confidence to believe in myself.  Today, Miss England is about far more than appearance. The Miss World, ethos is ‘Beauty with a Purpose’. Contestants in England are encouraged to raise awareness for charity, take part in community projects, create ethical fashion outfits from recycled materials and produce videos promoting the places where they live. Our  Miss England winner “Grace Richardson”  is currently in Vietnam representing England at the 75th Miss World  with her project “Every Drop Counts” , which focuses on water conservation, fast fashion and the environment.” 

Angie continues “ In 2019, I also introduced our Bare Face Top Model round, encouraging contestants to share make-up-free photographs on social media to celebrate natural beauty and self-confidence. We’re looking for inspiring natural beauty ambassadors who want to make a difference. Im looking forward to returning to the Beachcomber as its over 20years since I last held an event there , the venue has everything inhouse such as staging sound and light which is a bonus and Cleethorpes is where I grew up so I have lots of family in the area ! “

One contestant who has embraced the modern competition is Mary Jennings, an Emergency Responder who has represented Lincolnshire at Miss England for the past two years.

Earlier this year, Mary from Waltham near Grimsby won the national Miss Progress UK title before representing the United Kingdom at Miss Progress International in Italy. She also won the Ethical Fashion Award at the Miss England 2025 Semi-Final after designing an award-winning dress made from recycled Lincolnshire potato sacks.

The Yorkshire & Lincolnshire Beauty Awards will culminate in a glamorous catwalk final round on Saturday 17th October, where at least two winners will be crowned to represent Yorkshire and Lincolnshire at the Miss England and males will have the opportunity to enter the next Mr England national competition. Additional awards and qualifying places may also be presented.
